Cake Poker Review

I had heard some players saying that some of the less established sites have easier competition, or otherwise known as softer fields. The first time I heard about this was when Bodog got big. Bodog was, and probably still is, predominantly a sports betting site. Because people already had money moving to and from the site, online pokern became a very simple addition. When poker was added, lots of sports betters began testing out their skills on the felt, as well as betting lines and spreads, creating much more recreational play than other sites. The attraction to sites like pokerstars or full tilt is entirely based on poker. They don’t offer any casino games or entertainment other than poker, so the players are often considered more serious or at least more dedicated to the idea of player poker than something else.

Recently, I tested this out on Cake Poker, which is only a poker site, but it’s fledgling status indicated similarities to Bodog. While I cannot attest to the fields being noticeably softer than the others, there are some interesting ups to playing at a young site.

Firstly, the multitable tournaments are much smaller. You are more likely to see maximum fields of 500 on Cake poker whereas full tilt and pokerstars garner numbers in the thousands. This means that tournaments end quicker and there are fewer opponents to weed through, but it also means smaller prize pools and more expensive buy-ins for the same guaranteed prize pools. Cake can’t charge what some of the bigger sites can charge for a $25,000 guaranteed prize pool, because they don’t have the turnout to make such guarantees probable.

Cake is also mostly 10-players per table, as opposed to 9 at full tilt and pokerstars. They do not offer as many games either. There is no razz, no badugi, no mixed games. It is a site geared toward the nl texas hold’em players for sure, that being the most offered. They do have stud and Omaha though.
