What Happened to GM?

Tuesday, August 12th, 2008

GM was once the biggest automaker in the world by far. This reign at the top lasted for decades. But, with news that Toyota is on pace to take over the number one spot sometime next year, based on projections and GM’s recent history, things are changing. GM’s stock is in junk status, they are over $300 billion in debt, they are losing market share to the Toyota’s , Nissan’s, and Honda’s of the world.

GM likes to blame a lot of their problems on increased employee expenses in the United States due to the unions. This is a small factor I am sure, but mostly just an excuse. Toyota and other foreign automakers manufacture their cars in this country as well. In fact, the American car companies do a lot of their assembly in Mexico. So, the competition that is taking over GM’s top spot is incurring similar expenses.

I think the real problem is the poor quality and the design of the cars. As someone who used to only buy GM vehicles I can say I wouldn’t even consider buying one again. I find the design and look of the cars to be unattractive, I also feel the quality of their cars is inferior to their foreign competitors. While they clearly have not put as much effort into their cars as their competition, their prices somehow still remain equal with the competition. The sticker prices on the cars are similar I should say, but the promotions being used by the Big Three American automakers to sell cars is much different. Even with the sales promotions all three companies are still losing market share. Toyota gains market share every year and they have not had to offer an employee discount or a red tag sales event. They just build high-quality vehicles and that is all the promotion they need.

People work very hard for their money these days. It has become increasingly more difficult for families to make ends meet. The internet offers tremendous opportunity for buyers to research a product before making a purchase. Given how valuable people’s money is to them you can’t blame them for spending it as wisely as possible and looking for the best value.

It is unfortunate that such an immense company is now doing so poorly but they have nobody to blame but themselves. The management over the years has made poor decisions that has brought them to the place they are now. The management turned their back on the people of this country by moving jobs outside the company and also by charging them premium prices for inferior products. Now the people of this country has turned their backs on GM.

How to Make Money with Your Blog

Monday, August 11th, 2008

– What Is A Blog

A blog (or web log as what originally called) is the modern day equivalent of a journal…think ‘captains log stardate…’ and you’re heading in the right direction.

A blog is an online publication about a subject or subjects that interest you. You could write (blog) your thoughts and ideas about your favourite movies, you could log your daily activities, you could even write about your hobby.

Today advanced blogs can include more than just words – now they can include audio as well as pictures. You can even blog from your mobile phone if you care too!

Creating and Writing Your Blog

So how do you create a blog? The easiest way to start is to use Google’s Blogger.com system. Simply visit www.blogger.com and follow the prompts – they provide step by step instructions and you’ll be blogging in less time than it takes to boil an egg!

Blogger.com will allow you create a free blog and they’ll even let you host it at no charge too! Remember, a blog is published “out there” on the Internet so it has to live somewhere and the free hosting environment from Blogger.com is called Blogspot.

Writing (some people calling it ‘blogging’) to your blog is even easier than creating it. You can either use the built in publishing features provided by Blogger or you can use the ‘BlogThis’ button included with the Google toolbar. Again, complete instructions about how to blog your blog (now that’s a mouthful!) are included at the Blogger.com site and the Google.com toolbar page.

– Monetizing Your Blog

But unless you are into sharing your thoughts for free, you want to know how to make some money – AND – share your thoughts… right?

In a word, if you have focused blog traffic (readers) then that stream of people passing by has monetary potential. Your readers have the potential to spend money, the potential to click on a link, and potential to turn all your hard work into money – here’s how: TRAFFIC…

– Adsense (Google)

Simply put, this program devised by Google, puts a context sensitive advert in front of your viewers. If you’re blog is all about golf balls, then the adverts that you show will be about golf balls.

And when someone sees the advert and clicks on it you make money. How much you make depends on how much the click is worth (see the Adsense reporting data in your Adsense account for that info) and how many times the advert is clicked. As you can see, this is numbers game – the more traffic you get the more clicks you’ll get the money you make.

– Affiliate Sales

Another way to capitalize on your blog traffic is to offer the readers more than just advertising – offer them solutions.

If your blog is all about golf balls then it might be a safe bet that the reader plays golf. If they play golf then they probably want (like most golfers) to improve their swing or their short game, or any number of golfing challenges.

Well doesn’t it make sense to offer them these solutions from within your blog? Of course it does. And you do this by promoting other peoples products and solutions. When your reader clicks on one of these promotional links and chooses to buy the product, you get a slice of the sale proceeds – in some cases up to 75%

Now this might sound complex but it’s not. There are many affiliate programs on the Internet – simply type ‘affiliate programs’ into Google and you’ll see what I mean. However, for my money the leader (at the time of writing this) was www.ClickBank.com

This company (like all good online companies) offers you plenty of valuable information about how to sell and promote other peoples products and make money. Afterall, your blog did all the work and got the traffic – why not turn that traffic into money too?

– Search (Google)

You just read about Google’s Adsense program, well guess what – they have a search element to that program. Basically you can add a Google search box to your blog and when someone searches from your blog Google takes not of this and you are credited for any sales that result from your ‘assistance’. Again, the Google adsense program contains all the nitty gritty details so check them out.

– Other Affiliate & Joint Venture Ideas

By now you should be getting the idea – TRAFFIC equals MONEY. So get creative with your blog. If you’ve got the readers then think of ways to offer them other products and services.

Here are a few other ideas to get the creative juices flowing:

– Ebay

Let’s go back to our example from earlier – golf. If you’ve got readers wanting to get information on Golf then why not offer them the chance to get highly focused golfing products from Ebay?

Did you know that you can become an EBay affiliate? Well you can, and when someone registers to join Ebay or someone buys something from Ebay you will get a portion of the sale proceeds.

Again, TRAFFIC equals MONEY.

– Paydotcom

Although Clickbank.com has been the leader for digital product sales and affiliate marketing, a new player has come on the scenes – www.PayDotCom.com

I know, that name is a real mouthful, but they seem to have a lot going for them. They too also have a great affiliate program and can provide you with great ideas for products to offer your readership.

– Blog Promotion & Marketing Strategies

You’ve likely heard this a hundred times…if you build it they will come. Well I’ve got news for you…they won’t!

Not unless they can find you, and of course, not unless you offer them something relevant and useful (which you are doing by publishing a blog on your chosen subject.)

So how do we get the readers to find you – here are a few of the major ways:

– Blog Directory Updates

When you set up your blog (if you are using Blogger) you can tell the system to notify the blog directory when any changes occur. This means that people (who are watching the directory) will know when your blog has changed.

You should also ensure that your blog is set as PUBLIC so that it will be made available to the entire world. No good keeping it a secret if you want visitors!

Incidentally, when the Internet was young (circa 1994) the free websites and free hosting solutions were ignored by the major search engines. The thinking behind this was as follows – if you cannot afford the low cost of hosting then you were not serious and so they figured why bother including you.

These days, hosting and websites are so cheap to obtain that they’ve become a commodity and now that elitist mentality has gone. The free sites are now included in the search engines. And I should point out that Google owns Blogger so they’re a supporter.

– Pinging

One of the neat features of blogs is the ability to syndicate the content. Syndicating the content simply means that people interested in content like you have on your blog, can be notified and presented with the information when it becomes available.

Now don’t worry about the technical details, just know that there is a way to do this and for the most part it’s call RSS.

If you want to get major search engine to pick up your blog and index it in a hurry, then the current tactic is to add your blogs RSS or XML specs to your Yahoo RSS feed list.

It’s a bit beyond the scope of this document, however it is straightforward enough. Simply log into your Yahoo account and click on the edit button under RSS feeds – add your blogs feed address and that’s it.

If you’ve kept the defaults from within Blogger then your RSS feed will be called: http://your-blog-name.blogspot.com/atom/xml

– Press Release

Press and media releases aren’t just for big companies – they’re for you too. The simplest way to approach this is to use a free PR distribution service like www.preweb.com

I’ve used them many times in the past with fantastic results – of course you still need to write a good press/media release but PRWeb really comes through after that.

PRWeb is free to use (although you can donate to upgrade features if you wish) and provides ample examples and a complete step by step guide to follow.

Simply get yourself a free account, write yourself a release (using their easy-to-follow guidelines) and submit it. Just remember to include your blog name and it’s web address so that the search engines can index it accordingly.

– UseNet, Forums & Discussion Boards

If your blog contains meaningful and useful information then you should take a little time and visit the various resources all over the web that would like to know about your blog.

Check out the newsgroups, the discussion forums and anything else you can find related to your chosen subject. It will take a little time at first but you will get the hang of it very quickly.

Just remember to be courteous when you post anything. Blatant advertising and commercial messages are often frowned upon so be sensitive to that. It’s generally acceptable to include a short bio box or signature at the end of your email or message posting so be sure to include a brief description and link to your blog.

Remember, add value and don’t be pushy.

– What’s Next?

Well as the shampoo bottles like to say “rinse and repeat”

This will take a while to gain momentum and the search engines can be a little slow at picking up the thread – the trick here is persistence. Which shouldn’t pose a problem for you since you’re blogging on a subject that interests you anyhow?

Here are a few passing thoughts to get you excited.

It’s very easy to earn $10 to $50 a day with this technique – once the traffic has begun flowing. Remember, TRAFFIC equals MONEY. These numbers are very conservative because I don’t want you thinking this is some get-rich-quick thing.

Sure you can earn more, I know people making at least $100 a day, but this system works as a function of the effort you put into it. You will need to create a valuable blog. You will need to write meaningful and useful content. If you throw up some shoddy link farm or inappropriate content you will be rewarded accordingly.

Tales from the Corporate Frontlines: Human Resources at Work

Sunday, August 10th, 2008

This article relates to the Human Resource Functions competency, commonly evaluated in employee satisfaction surveys. It reflects one employee’s satisfaction with the manner in which her HR department carried out their work. This competency examines how your employees feel with regards to the quality and implementation of the human resource role within your organization. A human resource department that is properly informed of employee issues, demonstrates a high integrity level, and communicates effectively with staff and management should expect a high satisfaction level in this competency area.

This short story, Human Resources at Work, is part of AlphaMeasure’s compilation, Tales From the Corporate Frontlines. It illustrates how a competent, compassionate staff can perform their HR functions and really make a difference in the lives of employees, creating goodwill that spreads throughout the workplace.

Anonymous Submission: Human Resources at Work

I’ve worked at a few different companies, and never had much interaction with human resources departments, other than hiring and benefits enrollment paperwork.

I’d like to tell you about one staff member who really made a difference in my life. Stricken with a sudden and very debilitating sickness, I was completely confused about my benefits and responsibilities with regard to time off for treatment, and the coverage provided by my company-paid health insurance plan. I’d rarely even been sick before, and never hospitalized.

I called work from my hospital bed to tell my manager what had happened. I asked a few questions about my options and he told me he hadn’t a clue—and offered to transfer my call to the HR department. I really didn’t know what to expect. I had heard some lunchroom complaints abut nasty attitude over the years, but had no reason to expect a problem in this situation. Still, I was nervous.

I needn’t have been. Julie was kind, helpful, and very efficient. She had a broad base of knowledge about my benefit programs and the sequence of procedures that I should follow. There were a few areas that seemed questionable, but she promised to get answers and get back to me. She fulfilled that promise quickly and efficiently.

Over the next few weeks, which proved to be a trying period, Julie was always there for me. She helped me process paperwork, contacted the proper home office departments on my behalf, and did everything she could to minimize the stress involved in my recovery. “You just concentrate on getting better, I’ll take care of everything at this end”, she would say to me whenever things got too confusing. She really understood my distraction and took over for me when I wasn’t thinking clearly. I’m sure there were times when another person would have lost her cool and become frustrated, but Julie never did.

I recently returned to work after a long rehabilitation period. I’m feeling much better now, and see and speak to Julie less often. When I think of the people who were most responsible for helping me to recover, I always think of her. She took responsibility to assist me, and did a fantastic job. She knew how to handle my issues, and was masterful at effective communication. Julie is an asset to our human resources department, and reached the standard that I believe all professionals in this field should strive for.

Moves are Made Toward Dawnay Sale

Thursday, August 7th, 2008

Two of the richest men in Scotland – a pair of brothers – are preparing to purchase the property assets – worth over a million pounds – of the investment group Dawnay Day.

Many groups have already shown interest in the property portfolio, which is likely to sell for hundreds of millions of pounds, but Stuart and Calum Melville are likely to take a large share of the assets – taking the opportunity to reinvest the many millions they made from the sale of their industrial equipment company.

The brothers are estimated to be worth £75 million, and their investment vehicle – Denmore Investments – is understood to be managing the approach.

Asif Aziz, the owner of a number of London properties including the Trocadero leisure complex, and Sol Zakay’s Topland Group are understood to have already contacted BDO, to express their interest in adding some of these assets to their portfolio.

The current situation came around quite fast, after Dawnay Day was forced to close a derivatives position with thier fund manager F&C , forcing the company into administration.

More than £60 million was lost in the sale, which was executed following a call by a lender to Dawnay Day.

Klimt and Naggar, the two principals at Dawnay Day have generally avoided publicity, despite their investment strategy that has often targeted high-profile businesses.

This is not the first investment fund that the men have been involved with – since they met in the ’80s, they’ve been responsible for a number of others, some which are listed on LSE.

Formal Cruise Wear Night – the Agony and the Ecstasy!

Wednesday, August 6th, 2008

Formal night on the cruise – The agony and the ecstasy! How better to describe the romantic night when cruise passengers don their best formal cruise wear and strut their stuff?

For some men, it’s the agony of picking out your finest formal cruise wear, carefully packing them in your suitcase, unpacking and un-wrinkling them, and then, worst of all….. having to put the threads on. For other men, it’s the romantic ecstasy of seeing your dazzling beauty dressed in her finest, and walking arm-in-arm through the elegant dining room.

For some women, it’s the agony of deciding what to pack for the formal cruise wear night. Should it be black or brightly colored? Long or short? Or should it be slacks or a gown? For other women it’s the ecstasy of a wonderful romantic night of elegance.

Formal wear is somewhat subjective when it comes to cruises. Most often for men, it will mean wearing a dark suit or jacket and a tie. Tuxedos on some cruises are more common. In fact, many cruise ships will have tuxedos and formal cruise wear available for rent – in advance from the cruise line. You will however want to pre-plan and book your rental as soon as possible before you sail so you won’t be disappointed.

That was easy for the men. There is formal cruise wear available for rent for women as well. The same early planning and booking applies as for men. For many women however, the task of preparing formal cruise wear can be much more exciting or much more daunting. Formal evening gowns are elegant and can be show-stoppers. But pant suits and slacks or skirts and tops can be glamorous as well! In fact a very practical article for any woman to pack is a pair of black silky “cocktail” type slacks. They take up very little room in the luggage and resist wrinkling! Matched them with a couple of tops, and you have formal cruise wear ensembles with very little fuss. And, most have stretchy waistbands so you can enjoy the wonderful culinary masterpieces in comfort! Flat or low heeled shoes make navigating onboard much easier and more comfortable.

These formal nights can make your cruise a wonderful romantic getaway! Exquisite cuisine, elegant dining rooms, intimate lounges, stage shows and reviews all lend themselves to enhance romance on board. Imagine a nightclub filled with tuxedoed men and sequin covered dresses on women. And everyone is basking in the radiant delight of the evening.

Some of the cruise lines request that you remain in your formal cruise wear for the entire evening. Others are more relaxed about the attire. And some, like Norwegian cruise lines operate on a relaxed “Freestyle” cruising atmosphere.

For those of you who absolutely despise getting all gussied up, most cruise ships have dining areas that always allow casual cruise wear. Remember however that most reservation only dining restaurants require formal or informal dress attire as well.

It’s always best, if you have any concerns about what constitutes formal cruise wear on your chosen ship, to check with the cruise line in advance.

So…..now you can relax. The tough formal cruise wear packing has been taken care of! Check out some of the other informative pages.

See the Bald Facts on Male Pattern Baldness and What you Could do About the Situation

Wednesday, August 6th, 2008

There are a myriad of issues that will make the luscious hair strands on your hairline fall out, the big reason is hereditary hairloss. Male baldness will often become an issue for as many as 40 percent of guys under the age of 35 years old. The usual man has in excess of 80000 hair stands on their full scalp and will often easily shed fifty to 150 hair strands within an average day through brushing, bathing, and exercise. This will often seem like tons but in fact it is the usual.

The abnormal rate of hair loss is when people are losing more hair strands than what is coming back out. And folk will soon feel and realise people have abnormal hair follicle loss when men and women begin to see your hair not coming back. It is always best practise to check with a health professional to make sure people aren’t seeing the side effects from any medical disorders or under enormous stress.

The most common cause though is male pattern baldness. This occurs when the hormones in your head force the hair follicles to disappear. This closing effect makes the hair unable to grow. Get expert assistance in hairloss from Advanced Hair Studio now.

If folk are curious you might go and chat to a hair specialist and discover what type of hair follicle loss you are suffering from and also learn what eye-opening hair strands loss treatments are available to worried men.

How to Find the Best Bicycle Frame

Monday, August 4th, 2008

Whether you’re shopping for a bike or just admiring them, the first part you notice is probably the bicycle frame. The frame is the heart of a bicycle, as well as its art.Including the basically triangular core structure that supports both seat and handlebars and the extensions that attach to the wheels, the color and the geometry of the bicycle frame not only affects the beauty of the bike, but its strength and speed as well. The pleasure and success you derive from bicycle riding will be strongly impacted by having the right frame for your physique and your purposes.

Naturally, your bicycle frame will take into dramatic account whether you ride primarily on roads or off-road.Not only are so-called mountain bike frames made of noticeably bigger “tubes,” they are made of more shock resistant materials, with stronger weldings. Road bike frames have a smaller triangular geometry and the main consideration in their material is its weight.Everything on a road bike is designed to keep the rider’s resistance to a minimum in order to promote fluency and speed, while a mountain bike is designed with the primary goal of shock absorption and maneuverability in mind alongside speed-influencing factors.

Even among these two main divisions, you will find major differences in bicycle frames.Road bikes used primarily for touring or recreational riding will have frames with a more relaxed geometry and more total horizontal spread front to back, while racing bikes will tighten that structure for a shorter front to back bike length.A tighter triangle and less distance between the bicycle frame and the tires acts to decrease the resistance of wind and road for a racer, as well as to increase the bike’s ability to respond to the quick, minute maneuverings road racing requires.

In addition, your unique body shape and weight will also affect what kind of bicycle frame is best for your comfort and accomplishment.Standard frame measurements, made along the seat tube of a frame, take into account the length of your legs, but the relationship of your torso length and arm length to the length of your legs is also extremely important to comfort on a bicycle, and the length of the top tube of the bicycle frame must also be examined. Two riders of identical height may need completely different bicycle frames. The best thing you can do is to shop at a bicycle store where knowledgeable riders earn their living and where you are allowed to try out a bicycle before buying it.

Alastair Hamilton is a successful writer who offers a truly unique depth of experience in competitive cycling. Reach further articles on bicycle frames at http://www.bike-cycling-reviews.com, the hub of cycling information.

The Angry Guy on the Phone…

Friday, August 1st, 2008

Health problems Caused by Anger:

The constant flood of stress chemicals and associated metabolic changes that accompany recurrent unmanaged anger can eventually cause harm to many different systems of the body. Some of the short and long term health problems that have been linked to unmanaged anger include:

Headache
Digestion problems, such as abdominal pain
Insomnia
Increased anxiety
Depression
High blood pressure
Skin problems, such as eczema
Heart attack
Stroke.

Anger just isn’t worth the effort.

Let me explain…

The guy on the other end of the phone was having a terrible day.

He was angry with a capital A.

Apparently, someone had failed to meet him for a pre-arranged appointment and he was on the telephone, letting me have it with both barrels.

I listened.

Tried to get a word in edgeways.

Failed.

Waited whilst he raved on about “the importance of sticking to appointments”

Then I said something that stopped him dead in his tracks.

“My name is Chris. Not Dave.”

“You have the wrong number.”

After he hung up the phone (Just in case you are wondering, no – his didn’t apologise) I went into the kitchen and put the kettle on for a cup of coffee.

And I thought; I wonder if, after he calmed down, he would have realized how utterly pointless his anger was and how in the big scheme of things it wasn’t worth it.

You see, somewhere in this world a child is dying of cancer.

Somewhere a baby is taking his or her first breath.

Somewhere a man is sat by the bedside of his wife of 50 years, watching her fade away.

Somewhere, a teenager is falling in love for the very first time.

A couple are getting married.

Another are being torn apart by the pain of divorce.

A kid is learning to ride a bike.

A refugee is hiding in a ditch with soldiers searching for her, ready to shoot to kill.

When you compare THOSE things with the fact that some guy missed an appointment – our angry friend really has nothing much to worry about now does he?

What about YOU?

Are you getting stressed out over the little things?

Things that in the scheme of things really don’t matter.

Next time you feel like getting angry – stop and make sure that it is something worth getting angry about.

9 times out of 10 you’ll see that it isn’t.

Use your energy for better things.

Go outside and look up at the stars and stand amazed at the beauty of God’s creation.

Let go of your anger. The proverb says “Anger rests in the bosom of fools”

100 years from now all that will matter is how you have lived your life.

Choose the path that says; “I’m not going to give in to anger. I’m going to see things in perspective. I’m going to ‘let it go’ and choose to be calm.
