We Are All Consultants

Monday, June 16th, 2008

In our business lives we wear many hats. We often think of our job title as the way to describe our work. In fact, in any social situation, the question, “So what do you do?” will come up early in any conversation with a new person. How do we respond to this question? Invariably, we respond with our job title and the name of our organization. “I’m the Finance Manager at ABC Corp. Sometimes the conversation progresses beyond that, but often, that is all we have to say to describe our work.

And that is often how we think about it as well. Finance Manager. Chef. Staff Pharmacist. Marketing Director. Salesperson. Clerk. Janitor. Principal. Supervisor. Welder. Seldom though is any job as simple as a job title might suggest. We play a variety of roles, and do a variety of things within the scope of that job – whatever that job is.

Some people will answer that “So what do you do?” question with, “I’m a consultant.” I remember when my grandmother asked me about my new job at Chevron, and I answered with “I’m a training consultant.” Grandma wasn’t satisfied with that answer, so she probed further, “but what do you do?” she asked.

After a few minutes of discussion and explanation, she said, “Oh, you teach adults!” That was, in part what I did then, and happily, nearly twelve years later that is still what I do. I am a trainer, speaker, leader, writer and more. But most of all, I am a consultant. It may seem logical that I am a consultant, but you might not realize that it is very likely that in at least part of your work, or in other areas of your life, you are too.

Consulting is a big word – not in letters or syllables – but in scope. Consultants can play many valid roles, and therefore many roles that people play at work can be looked at as consulting.

Some of the Roles

Technical expert
Mentor
Coach
Lecturer
Trainer
Facilitator
Advisor
Subject Matter expert

…are all roles that consultants can hold. Any role where you have (or want to have) influence, but don’t necessarily have authority, is a consulting role. If you have an expertise that your organization needs, you have an opportunity to leverage that expertise to greater value by thinking of yourself as a consultant.

Why it Matters

Why does it make sense for many of us to think of ourselves as consultants, and not just by our job title? There are several reasons, and they all relate to your viewpoint, your contribution and your future.

If you see yourself as “just a ” you might grow bored with your work, or undervalue what you bring to it. So if you re-think of your work (or part of your work) as being a consultant it might re-invigorate you, stretch you and help you enjoy your work life more.

When people think of themselves as people trying to find ways to use their expertise to reach organizational goals, it helps them think of their role differently, again, more like that of a consultant. Consultants are constantly looking for ways to improve a situation – bringing their experience and expertise to bear on any situation.

So what is the bottom line? Seeing yourself in this way allows you to grow personally and professionally. And, not coincidentally, that growth will make you vastly more valuable to your organization, which is also a very good outcome!

What’s Next?

Once you see yourself with a broader role, or begin to think about some of the roles you play in new ways, you have more means to think about your own professional development. Think about it this way – if you only think of yourself by your job title, you may be limiting your view of your own development. When you expand your view of the role you can play – of using your expertise to impact the organization, you suddenly will see new skills that you would like to hone.

Effective consultants use a wide variety of interpersonal skills expertly. Things like listening, conflict resolution, both written and oral communication skills, and more are critical. Beyond that there are intrapersonal skills that have high value when we play a role of a consultant. When we become clearer on our own motives, are flexible and willing to change (and understand change processes), and have greater self knowledge we will be more successful.

On top of these things there are models and processes that we can learn to play of a variety of these consulting roles more effectively.

I challenge you to think of your work and role in new ways. This rethinking may lead you to realize that MOST of the work that you do is some form of consulting, or you may find that you only play those roles someplace outside of work (in the community, as a volunteer, or somewhere else), or you may find yourself somewhere in between those two extremes.

If thinking about this leads you to think of your work in new ways, congratulations! You have taken another step on the road to unleashing your potential.

How To Set Sensible Weight-Loss Goals

Saturday, June 14th, 2008

The key to any successful weight-loss endeavor is to set some sensible weight loss goals. Setting goals will let you track your progress and gives you a definite target to aim for. You don’t want to aim too high and set yourself up for failure or even worse, risk your health by losing too much too fast. At the same time, you want to set a goal that is a little bit of a challenge. Here are some guidelines on how to come up with a sensible weight-loss goal.

Don’t lose more than 1 to 2 pounds a week.
You are aiming for slow and steady weight-loss. To set your goal, decide when you want to lose the weight by, and then expect to lose 1 or 2 pounds a week. So, if you figure a time period of 6 months, you want your goal to be around 26 – 52 pounds.

Even small goals will make a difference.
Don’t feel like you have to lose a lot of weight to make difference in your health. You will see benefits by losing as little as 10% of your body weight. If you weigh 150 pounds, losing 15 pounds may show an improvement in your overall health and the way you feel.

Use the Body Mass Index.
Feeling overweight, or thinking that you should lose some weight can be very subjective. To get a better feel for where you are at, you may want to calculate your Body Mass. Visit http://www.cdc.gov/nccdphp/dnpa/bmi/calc-bmi.htm to find out what your BMI is and what it means. Adjust your weight-loss goal so you will eventually be in the “normal” category.

Speak to your physician.
Schedule an appointment with your general practitioner. He or she knows your medical history and will be able to advise you on how much you should lose. It is always a good idea to speak to your physician before you start any diet or exercise program.

Set Mini Goals.
Once you set your ultimate goal and have a time-plan for reaching it, break it up into several mini goals to reach along the way. Looking at a big goal can seem a little intimidating. Breaking it up into smaller goals allows you to focus on your first mini goal and gives you a feeling of accomplishment when you reach that goal. Then just move on to the next mini goal until you reach your big goal.

Now that you have your weight-loss goal and the mini goals in place, start by tackling your first mini goal. I know you can succeed by approaching weight-loss one step at a time. Your next challenge is just to get started.

Are You Starving to Lose Weight?

Friday, June 13th, 2008

It’s never too late to rethink on your diet plan and make fresh and realistic health resolutions. It is the right time to take stock of the situation. Ask yourself: Are we being fair to ourselves when we make these strict guidelines of diet and exercise? Most people recoil at the thought of dieting and exercising, especially on a cold winter morning. And for all those people who are fed up of diet dictums, the good news is that the best way to lose weight is not to diet or deprive yourself of all the good things in life. If this sounds too good to be true, wait till you try this:

Wellness – the latest buzzword to hit the health industry – is actually the best way forward. Most people who plan strict diets do it in the hope that after losing the extra kilos, they will look ravishing. But the truth is that lusterless sagging skin or loose abdominal muscles are not the result that people want. What we want is a happy, healthy, svelte figure munching an apple. But alas, that is not what we end up with very often. Therefore, after trying to lose weight for the nth time, it is now time to stop dieting forever and yet look slim.

Wellness is not only about losing weight, it is also about a positive mindset and transforming oneself into a holistically healthy person. This kind of a change in focus will not only result in weight loss but also give you great skin, good hair, a glowing persona and best of all, freedom from diets. Here is what the wellness and diet schedule entails:

o Understanding your food weaknesses and indulging in them two times a week.

o Maintaining a diet log book.

o Pick up a routine that you enjoy which is like an exercise:
dancing, or walking the pet, floor exercises with music etc.

o Never deprive yourself. Always add new healthy habits to the current schedule, like having a yummy soup in the evening instead of tea and a scrumptious salad during lunch with olives, balsamic dressing and some greens and cheese cubes.

o Enjoy your meal. Many people who eat hurriedly always miss out on the flavors, do not feel satiated and end up compensating by overeating.

o And if all this does not convince you, count the number of times you have struggled through a diet program only to regain the weight with a few extra kilos.

o Looking at unhealthy habits and finding alternatives. For example, if you are prone to drinking too much of tea/coffee, substitute some for herbal teas which smell and taste good. If you eat too much of fried food, learn to make toasted snacks or baked snacks, and experiment with new roasted snacks.

o Do not starve or eat less. When we cut down on quantities, our emotional system retaliates, so the best option is to add healthy foods to the diet before cutting out on food suddenly.

Heartbar – A Network Marketing Horror Story!

Friday, June 13th, 2008

We do a training called the “5 Pillars for Success”. These are the pillars that YOU as an MLM distributor need to have in place for success. It’s not what a network marketing company needs. It’s you, the distributor, and that is an important difference to understand.

The top company in the network marketing industry does $10 BILLION in sales every year. Company #2 does 1 Billion a year. And what’s amazing is, Company #1 pays only about 10% of the commission that Company #2 pays!

Company #1 is very profitable. But, aside from the old-timers, the distributors are not profitable at all.

Do They Even Know How To Spell MLM?

So company management experience with integrity is Pillar #1. Has that CEO or management team ever built a network marketing organization?

A lot of these network marketing company owners come from a Fortune 500 background. They’ve never driven 4 hours one-way to do an opportunity meeting for 20 people, only 2 show up, do the meeting, do the training, drive home, fall asleep at the wheel, pull into a rest area and sleep for a couple hours so they can get home, get a shower, and go to work that day as a secretary, a nurse, a carpenter, a doctor …

THAT is the truth about MLM that these pretty-boy hotshots will never know. Let me tell you a story.

My good friend Dave Cones came to Florida from Oklahoma, in 2002. We were invited as guests to an opportunity convention, because we were doing some consulting with these people. We sat in the audience. It was a 2-day event. We watched the presentations & watched the people there.

The company – and I can mention their name, for reasons which will soon be obvious – was Heartbar, a publicly-traded network marketing company. They were about 18 months old at the time.

President of the Company – Great, Fabulous Guy!

You couldn’t have found a nicer guy … but he didn’t know anything about MLM. His background was Fortune 500.

So he’s onstage doing a presentation, and he said, “You know, I’ve just so enjoyed travelling the world, travelling across the U.S., going to the meetings, meeting such great, great awesome people. What amazing people that we’ve met!”

“And that’s going to have a big impact on our decision, if we ever decide to do away with the compensation plan and go to direct sales.”

Dave & I looked at each other. We had the same thought: “Whoa! Hard to believe that guy said that from the stage!”

The Reps Must’ve Been on LSD!

When they took a break, Dave & I chatted with some of the reps. We asked what they thought about what the President said about doing away with the compensation plan.

Nobody heard it!

It was amazing. It was like they were on some euphoria drug. We didn’t talk to one single person who heard him say that!

Something else those reps didn’t know: Heartbar created a product and was selling it to athletes. They didn’t think their reps would ever find out. Of course, the reps did find out. And when they realized their own company was competing against them, they raised a howl.

The “Dear John” Letter Arrives

And right after this ruckus, the company sent out a letter of termination to every single Heartbar rep.

How could they do it? Because a clause in the Heartbar Policies & Procedures said “Company may terminate the status of any distributor at its sole discretion, without cause, by giving 30 days written notice to the distributor.”

And if you were unclear what they meant there, you just had to read down another couple paragraphs. It said, “Termination results in the distributor’s loss of his or her sponsored downline organization.”

So distributors built the organization, built the group volume, & built the product sales. And the company cut the reps out of the profit picture and went direct sales with it.

This is EXACTLY what you can expect with a management team of Fortune 500 guys who never built an MLM downline. They have no understanding, no empathy for you. Their only concern is bottom line profitability.

So if you built their business for them, but it’s in their financial interest to get rid of you – and they can legally do so – you will be history.

Have you read YOUR network marketing company’s Policies & Procedures lately?

Business Valuation is Critical

Wednesday, June 11th, 2008

What is Business Valuation?
The term business valuation is the method by which the business worth is determined. This usually happens when the business is for sale, when the business is looking for extra funding from the banks, when the business is considering taking on extra investors, or where the business is looking at merging with another organisation.

Aspects of Valuing a Business
A business is worth whatever someone else is prepared to pay for it and therefore its value will vary from person to person. There are many ways to value a business and the final price will differ, depending on the method used.

When the business is for sale, the price the seller wants is usually never the price received. This is because the seller’s perception of the value is usually much higher than the buyer’s. The final price is usually in between because the buyer and seller will negotiate an agreed figure.

Value against Ability to Make a Profit
When purchasing a business, obtain professional advice regarding the valuation. You need to be happy that you are not paying more than what you believe it is worth. If you pay too much and encounter financial problems later on, your capital reserves will diminish very quickly, because the business will not perform to the level indicated by the seller.

In general, a business should be valued against the ability it has for making profits. Other factors, such as the ability to generate good cash flows, or the consistency of profits, or a potential for growth and the lack of competitors, will have an effect on the price. Because each business is unique, it is important to use the most appropriate valuation method that does justice to the particular business and it’s potential.

Finding True Worth of the Business
If you are buying a business it is important to calculate the true worth of the business on offer. This can be a problem for a prospective buyer. It is for this reason that the buyer should seek professional advice, both from a business valuer or accountant, as well as from a business broker who deals in the type of business offered by the seller.

From the buyer’s point of view, buying a business is an investment decision and, as with any other investment decision, the net worth or value will be based upon the ability of the business to provide returns.

These returns are represented by the profits the business makes, so the value of available profits will have a bearing on the net worth (or price) finally agreed to by both parties. An area that requires special attention is goodwill.

Goodwill has many definitions, but one of the simpler explanations for goodwill is; it assumes that because the business has been running with an established clientele or customer base for some time, the clientele or customer base will keep coming to the business for their requirements, thus creating a value known as goodwill.

Price based on Asset Values
When a business is put on the market to be sold, the owner (seller) will ask for a price based on the asset value, plus its ability to generate profits for the potential new owner. Assets could mean; plant and equipment, stocks, branding, trademarks and licences etc. owned by the business. Valuing assets is fairly easy. However, arriving at the true value of the assets is not always straightforward.

For example, the assets would be valued in the books of the business at a different valuation than in the current market. Some assets (such as computers), may be in the business books at $4,000 being the original cost less depreciation, and yet because of the advancement in technology, that same computer could now be worth half that.

A potential owner will therefore only be prepared to pay market value, rather than the original cost, less depreciation. Another intangible asset valued is known as goodwill, (already explained above). Also, another asset, (which can be termed intangible) is intellectual property.

Intellectual property relates to the patents, trademark and other trade secrets and designs, which are owned by the business. Because they are unique to the business they have value.

The Real Solution for Ulcers

Wednesday, June 11th, 2008

The 2005 Nobel Prize for physiology or medicine has been awarded to Australians Barry J. Marshall and Robin Warren, for showing that stomach and intestinal ulcersare caused by bacterial infection rather than stress.

Their discovery, made in 1982, changed peptic ulcer from a chronic and disabling condition to an easily treatable one.

They established that the bacterium Helicobacter pylori is the most common cause of ulcers, an assertionthat went against the prevailing thought in the medical community at the time. Their discovery began a large-scale reassessment of the causes of other chronic inflammatory diseases, such as Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, rheumatoid arthritis, and atherosclerosis.

USA Today October 3, 2005

Dr. Mercola’s Comment:When I read the headline for this article in USA Today (“2 Austalians Win Nobel Prize in Medicine”), I knew Dr. Marshall was one of the winners without even having to read the story. I have written about his novel therapy previously on the Web site. Congratulations are in order to him for going against the grain and turning the medical world upside down 23 years ago.

I remember VERY clearly in 1983 when I first read his intriguing work in Lancet and started putting many patients on his protocol with remarkable success. I also remember equally clearly the amazing resistance by every single GI expert I knew of. They all discounted the “theory” and said it was full of rubbish.

It was very clear to me back then that even though I was a brand new doctor, I knew my expert teachers were wrong. Time has proven that to be true. Similarly, it is even MORE obvious that nearly all of conventional medicine is dead wrong on how most disease operates. They are virtually 100-percentclueless about the true cause of disease.

Only this time I won’t have to sit back and wait for the Nobel Committee to validate my belief. I am taking a far more proactive role and my primary passion and mission in life is to catalyze the transformation of health care in the United Statesto one that appreciates and operates on the foundational truths of health. And you and I both know that does not involve using drugs and surgery as the first option.

Getting back to Dr. Marshall though, even though his approach on peptic ulcers was far closer to the best way than using H2 blockers and proton pump inhibitors like Nexium (whichis one of the WORST approaches for ulcers), he still did not get it completely right.

Although it is clear that H. pylori bacteria play a major role in ulcers, the more foundational and primary reason why most people acquire ulcers is that they have an impairment in their immune system that allows the H. pylori infection to take hold.

So while I used the Marshall antibiotic protocol 20 years ago to take care of ulcers, I abandoned it over10 years ago in favor of optimizing food choicesand effective toolsto address the underlying emotional stresses that temporarily collapse the average person’s immune system and make them susceptible to all sorts of infections.

Although antibiotics work, they rarely address the underlying cause of the problem. It makes far more sense to use the approach that I describe above, as it is inexpensive, virtually side-effect free and, most importantly, addresses the underlying cause of the problem.

Top Ten Reasons to Plan a Destination Wedding

Sunday, June 8th, 2008

You and the one you love are dreaming of an enchanted getaway, to do nothing less than tie the knot. Why should anyone want to go away, you say? Check out these reasons for taking a sandy route to the altar with a destination wedding.

1. Nearly stress-free planning!

Getting married is quite a big step, so we don’t ever want to say any wedding is completely and totally stress free. But, not having to worry about the seating chart, or who’s going to be the best man could take a lot of worry out of your Big Day.

2. Slim to none chance of inter-family fights

Especially if you invite them along. It’s vacation time for everyone!

3. It’s usually cheaper

There are all-inclusive packages that feature both your wedding and the honeymoon for $4,000 or $5,000, which is darn cheap compared to the average of $20,000 + for a traditional wedding and sit-down dinner reception.

4. Control!

An amazing relief if you’ve ever been part of a traditional wedding with two families involved. All the factors are completely and totally within your hands.

5. Second wedding heaven

Especially if you’ve already been there, done that with a big wedding, second weddings are perfect for the relaxing getaway to a beautiful locale. Don’t forget to ask about activities for the kids!

6. Your honeymoon begins immediately after the ceremony

Now, that’s not bad.

7. Pack light

You can choose your wedding clothes once you arrive in your exotic location! Think snowsuits, island gowns, saris, and of course, shorts.

8. Parental bliss

If they’re coming, you will get to hear them say over and over, “we’ve been wanting to take a vacation!”

9. Use your imagination

You can eat before the ceremony, or after. You could have a cake, or not. You could jump in the ocean, or stay on the sand. Endless opportunities.

10. Fun for those who attend

Think of what you’re doing for them! A cruise, a ski vacation, or a weekend on the beach – who wouldn’t enjoy themselves?
